The bright lights and colors of Hong Kong call to me as does the non-stop pace of everyone in the city. As a STEM student, arranging study abroad is difficult to accomplish within the traditional course of study. I am currently applying early to veterinary school, and the Gilman Scholarship is my opportunity to study political science and psychology while studying abroad.
While in the bustling city of Hong Kong, I have taken courses that will complete my political science minor and work toward a psychology minor to fulfill the multidisciplinary experience requirement for my B.S. in Biology. Psychology is an area that I foresee being extremely useful during my career as a veterinarian, particularly the psychology of pain and grief. I also plan to implement political science, specifically environmental policy, into my practice.
In Hong Kong, I have taken Chinese and attempted to utilize all of the opportunities available to City University of Hong Kong students. One example of this is my involvement in ELMS, a group that helps people improve their English. While the students I interact with are learning better English, I am making local friends and learning more about local culture and history. Physical recreation and the extracurricular activities I take part in will make me a more competitive student and person.
